It's bonkers, even the mad dogs are indoors. It's 11.15am now and you just don't want to go outside, the air is like soup, the heat like a great weight on your head. What I wouldn't give for a cold drizzly day...

I'd have loved to have seen that Riley - must have been excellent. I don't know whether the quality of Smiths was better than Jaeger, but they would both have been better than Lucas. When I was on the motoring magazines we referred to Lucas as the inventors of darkness...

Nice to hear that you and your "Tribe of the Enumerated" have so far avoided the great ozzy flame-out. That old Welsh hymn "The Ash Grove" would have an entirely different meaning if it had emanated from Australia.

Your mention of Smiths versus Jaeger brought back the time in my youth when I had enough spare time and cash to indulge in vintage cars, and how we used to get all excited when we found a particular make or model had Jaeger dashboard instrumentation rather that what we saw as mundane Smiths. My '34 Riley 9, Lincock Coupe had Jaeger, which I thought was very posh. No doubt you'll tell me the better actual quality lie with the Smiths versions, but what the Hell, we were looking for something different we could point out to interested passers-by. Several times I was stopped by the police, just so they could admire the vehicle... ;)

Ah yes, no Sunday drivers here. Top speed is what it is all about and in this neck of the woods if you don't have a 4WD with at least a V6 engine, or alternatively a car with a V8 engine, well you don't deserve to be out on the road. The other day a car was tailgating me as I drove 20km over the speed limit down the country lane. It was like she'd got stuck on my tow hitch. At one stage she shook her fist at me. I stopped at the school and so did she. When she got out her police uniform insignia winked in the sunlight. She said, "Mate, you need to move it."

I do enjoy your observations of the local 'wildlife' especially as they are often so much in contrast to Norfolk UK. Our persistent traffic problem is 'Sunday' drivers, who only use their cars once a week to 'go out for a ride' at 35 MPH in the middle of the road and are immune to blaring horns, flashed headlights and extreme cursing. I suspect that an encounter between one of your 'Toyota Mums' and a Norfolk Sunday Snail, would put the Snail into orbit tout suite!
